I Don’t Belong Here

Many people have the sense that they don’t belong in the place where they were born and raised. It’s because society has its rules and often we don’t subscribe to those rules. In order for us to comply with the rules society does its best to make us feel bad for our non-compliance.

I’ve often felt a greater sense of belonging when I’ve gone to stay in another country, a country where I truly don’t belong. In foreign countries I don’t know the unspoken rules that exist and no-one expects me to follow them. Simply being a decent person seems to be enough. It’s not so much that I belong more in these foreign countries, but it feels ok to not belong.
